BKL Makes Lemonade from Lemons: Climbing, Dryland & the Bogburn

BKL kids have been handed a lot of lemons lately- no snow to ski on, warm temps, cancelled races, Range closed. They have been doing a great job of making the best of things and turning it all into Lemonade!

Last Tuesday, BKL kids did a day at MetroRocks Climbing gym. Lots of fun was had by all- Penguins through Racers. We did the self-belays, the bouldering walls and some kids found the Foozball too. Everyone went home with smiling faces and tired arms! (Photos below).

Thursday had us back at Mill River Park for some dryland adventures. These gung-ho kids had fun doing a  muddy run, some speedball and soccer and lots of agility in waning light and dark.

As the week went on, ski conditions just seemed to get worse. I promised the Racers that we would definitely ski on Saturday, so when Saturday’s BKL race at Sleepy Hollow was cancelled, we quickly changed plans and everyone signed up for the Bogburn which had been moved from its traditional location in Pomfret to Rikert Touring Center in Ripton.  We had a very strong showing with 13 kids from MNC racing.  Were conditions great? No! Kind of like a ribbon of icy snow with a very well set track. The people at Rikert did a great job preparing a ski course that held up to the 200 or so racers. Even the tricky downhill that seemed icy at first softened up as it was skied in and wasn’t bad at all. MNC skiers did very well- most of them finishing in the top ten of their age groups! We have a very strong team! Congratulations to Daisy Tremble who skied the Lollipop, Oliver Tremble, Finn and Ollie Laber and Izabella Altodonna who all skied the Gr. 1-4 race, Ansel Sprague, Oakley Crawford and Liam Vile who skied the 5/6 race, and to James Langan, Isobel Calfee, Kate Carlson, Brooke Greenberg and Astrid Longtreth who all skied the 7/8 race.   We also had one U16 ski (Niko Cuneo) and 7 Masters skiers. A few photos below.

Sleepy Hollow BKL Race Cancelled, Bogburn/Rikert is ON!

Update Evening of 1/05/23:

The Sleepy Hollow BKL Race for Saturday has been cancelled. The Bogburn has moved their race from Pomfret to Rikert Touring Center.  BKL, U16, Open Men & Women categories. NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION!  Register up until Friday at 6 pm online at SKIREG.

Coach Rosemary will be on hand to help wax.

Fun at Tomasi Meadow!

We had a really fun MNC day at Tomasi Meadow on Tuesday, with all of our various age groups represented in this beautiful mountain setting. Nestled right under Mt Mansfield and adjacent to the Mountain Road, this field is groomed by Peter Davis (thanks!) and provides about 2km of rolling trails.

We brought out the tiki torches for a little trailside light, and our BKL skiers had a great practice while some Juniors and Masters also skied around. When the sun fully set on solstice-eve, the torches continued to light a path for our Evening Masters. Everyone enjoyed skiing on hardwax with comfortable temps, and it was a great experience showcasing our big community!

Lake Placid EC needs volunteers!

Volunteers at last year’s MNC Skiathlon (thank you again!).

Are you a parent traveling to Lake Placid for the Eastern Cup? Please consider volunteering! It takes a ton of volunteers to host a well-run Eastern Cup race and Rikert had lots of volunteers lined up. Then had to move their race to Lake Placid and many of their volunteers had to withdraw. If you are going anyways, please consider taking a shift! Contact: Britta Pirrung, britta@frostmountainnordic.org

Everyone will really appreciate your help!

Updates for this weekend

The Kendall Classic race has been cancelled and will no longer happen on Sunday. Please note the following changes (or lack of changes!) to our weekend plans:

SATURDAY

Juniors: All are encouraged to race the Silver Fox Trot, the skate race which is still ON for Saturday. Registration is open until 5pm tonight (Friday) at the link below. The race begins at 10AM for the open categories: look for the MNC tent and trailer in the lower lot which will be home base.

Silver Fox Trot Registration

Masters: If you’re interested in racing, the Silver Fox Trot on Saturday is a great chance to enjoy what looks to be very nice freshly-made snow on a relatively tame course.

BKL: The Silver Fox Trot was, and still is, the primary BKL event for the weekend!

SUNDAY

Juniors: We will meet at Craftsbury at 10AM for a classic ski. Meet at the trailer in the lower lot, which will stay on-site overnight. Those that have not classic skied more than 2-3x this season will get in a distance classic ski. Those with more classic under them this season will do some classic intensity…exact format TBD. Note there will be no van for this session as Adam needs to remain at Craftsbury for our Masters event.

Masters: Our group ski event is STILL ON and still happening at 1pm. Nothing has changed with regard to this ski!

BKL: Snowmaking temps may have allowed other areas such as Rikert or even Sleepy Hollow to open up some terrain, so this is a good day to take a rest if you raced Saturday, or seek out some more snow!
