Sleepy Hollow BKL Race Photos & Recap

1st and 2nd graders lined up at the start.

Our first BKL race of the season kicked off on Sunday at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington.   Sixty-four racers and their fearless parents navigated the somewhat icy roads to Sleepy Hollow for the race. When I arrived, a bit of freezing rain was making conditions a bit tricky for waxing and kids that had them were using waxless skis. Luckily the rain stopped and trusty Toko yellow came through with enough grip to kick up the hills.

The festivities started off with the lollipop race where Daisy Tremble and Ollie Laber easily conquered the loop around Molly’s Meadow.  We had a large contingent of racers in the grade 1/2 race: Oliver Tremble, Ben Cross, Ansel Page and Mazzy Merrit all skied the 1 km loop down past the Inn, up Tina Turner and back to Molly’s Meadow. MNC skier Finn Laber and the other 3rd & 4th graders all skied 2 loops of the course and many of them opted to ski over the whale humps on the lap heading out of Molly’s Meadow. MNC Racers Logan Cichanowski, Liam Vile, Ansel Sprague and Oakley Crawford all skied 3 laps of the course and did an excellent job skiing up those hills on Tina Turner in the 5/6 race. Special shout out to Logan who skied an excellent race in his first race ever! Mary Moyer skied the 7/8 race,  her first race ever, and did a fantastic job as well! Congratulations to all these MNC skiers!

With the wind whipping around making it a bit cold outside, race organizers opted to forego an organized award ceremony and gave everyone a lollipop or a treat at the finish line. So much thanks to Heather and the folks at Sleepy Hollow for putting on such a fun race!

No MNC on Tuesday, 1/11

Due to cold temps forecast, there will be no skiing at the Range on Tuesday, January 11th.

EABC and MNC have called-off their training for the day, and the trails will not be open.

The good news: snowmaking has continued, and it is likely that Sprint, Pit, and Airplane loops will all be open by Thursday for some expanded ski terrain on the lighted loops.

Wax Recommendation for Sleepy Hollow BKL Race 1/09/22

We recommend waxing your skis before a race to make sure they are fast and to help maintain them! You must also clean all the old kick wax off your kick zone before coming to a race as well, so they are ready for coaches to apply the kick wax of the day. Below are some how-to videos to help you out.

Hot Wax or Liquid Paraffin? This is up for debate. Hot wax gets deeper into the pores of the ski and works well to maintain them and keep them running fast. Even if you usually use liquid paraffins, you should hot wax once in a while to keep your skis maintained. Liquid paraffin is good for a quick application, and it is good for racing.  Toko now claims that the liquid paraffin is best when you apply it the night before and brush it out in the morning. It seems the longer it soaks in, the better it works, except for the yellow, which we have found works well in really wet conditions when you spray it on just before your race and run to the start line with it wet.

Technique: Classic

Temps: Overnight low 12 F, climbing into the 20’s and up to 30 F during race time.

Hot Wax: Toko Base Performance Red, Swix CH 6 or PS 6 or the equivalent, non-flouro base wax.

Liquid Wax: Toko Base Performance Liquid Paraffin RED or SWIX Liquid Paraffin CH6.

BKL COVID Policy Update- Please Read

Positive COVID Cases:

We have consulted with pediatricians and despite the recent change in CDC quarantine rules, we are requiring that kids (and coaches) who test positive for COVID-19 should stay home from BKL practice until they are 10 days past their positive test and no longer have any symptoms.

Close Contacts:

If you are identified as a close contact of someone who is COVID positive and you are fully vaccinated, you may come to practice. If you are a close contact and you are not fully vaccinated, you cannot  come to practice until five days have passed after your contact, you are not having symptoms and you have gotten a negative PCR or antigen test.

Masking at Practice:

We are not requiring masks outdoors at practice but do encourage kids to maintain social distance. Masks are required inside any building, including the Walker Building. It is also fine if your child (or you) chooses to wear a mask outdoors at practice.

Biathlon volunteers needed Jan 15/16

From EABC’s John Madigan:
Hello Folks!

We are looking forward to racing at the range in Jericho again this winter and excited to host the US Biathlon East Regional Cup #2 on Saturday January 15th and Sunday the 16th, 2022. January is  coming upon us quickly. With the Canadian border now open, we can expect a large competitive field of racers. Saturday will be a Sprint race and Sunday will be a Mass Start! Always one of the most exciting races to watch.

In order to make these races happen we need your help. Many of you have been very generous with your time. Weekends can be very busy for everyone, but if you are able to spare one or two mornings that weekend it would be a tremendous help. As always training will be provided to all volunteers on whatever your assignment may be.

Let us know if you are interested in helping and please invite your friends to help out as well.  For those of you that continue to come back year after year, it is your enthusiasm, sense of fun, and great attitudes that make events at our range some of the best in the country.  Thanks for all the help in the past and in the future. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

Best,
John Madigan
