BKL Practice Week of 1/26-1/31

Thanks for remembering headlamps! Keep bringing them!

Should be great ski conditions all this week!

Tuesday 1/26/21: Everyone Classic

Weather: High of 25F, low of 18F

Wax: If you have wax left on from last week, cork it in well, then add 2 more layers: TOKO Red or SWIX V40 (Blue Extra).

Thursday 1/28/2021: Skate

Weekend Racers: Sunday 1/31 at Craftsbury: Classic Race

Craftsbury has just decided to hold a BKL race on Sunday 1/31. More details will be forthcoming, but these are the main points:

  • Starting at 1pm with youngest first; older kids going later; should be wrapping up around 3pm
  • CLASSIC (had initially said skate, but gotta take advantage of these perfect classic conditions)
  • Pretty standard BKL distances (lollipop does a quick rip; grades 1/2 do 1-2k; grades 3/4 do 2-3k; grades 5/6 do 3-4k; grades 7/8 do 4-5k)
  • Individual starts (1 racer every 30 seconds) to keep kids spaced out
  • Pre-registration will be REQUIRED to comply with a bunch of COVID regulations and will close Saturday evening—no day-of-race registration, unfortunately.
  • There will be an additional health screen form to fill out, too
  • Spectators are unfortunately not allowed per state rules, so please set parents’ expectations accordingly. Parents of children 10 and under are allowed to get them going but then need to make themselves scarce. Coaches can help out as much as needed.
  • Entry fee = $0.

**Instead of our Sprint skate time trial practice,  we will do this race!

If you are coming you need to sign-up, purchase a ticket (or have a season’s pass) and reserve ski time at Craftsbury.  Links to all below:

BKL Practices 1/19/21- 1/23/21

14″ fresh snow at Bolton!

Adam and the Bolton Groomers have been out packing things in and there should be more terrain groomed plus lots of great backcountry to explore this week. Weather will be colder, so bundle up!

Don’t forget your headlamp!

Every child (& Penguins parent) really needs to bring & wear a headlamp. Sunset is now at 4:45 and by 5 pm, it’s really dark! We can’t take our groups out to explore longer fun trails if there aren’t enough kids with headlamps in the group. It’s a safety issue- kids get spread out skiing and the coach can’t see them if they are not lit up.  Be sure to pack your child a headlamp and have them put it on or put it in their pocket when they get out of the car at practice.

Kids with waxable classic skis (Racers & some others):

It’s time to clean the kick wax off them. The weather will be colder this week and you need to get the warmer wax off. Here is a video on how to do it: Kick Waxing Basics  (Start the video at the beginning for a tutorial on how to kick wax, start it at 5:30 to learn how to remove the wax). If you don’t have wax remover, don’t fret! Just scraping off the old wax with a putty knife will be sufficient this week.

Tuesday, 1/19/21: Classic for Everyone

Fun backcountry adventures and kick & gliding through some powder!

Kick Wax:  3 layers of Toko Red or Swix V40 (Extra Blue)

Weather: High of 21F, possibly fog

Thursday, 1/21/21: Skate

Downhill practice and more work on our skate skills!

Arctic Foxes 3 will have a guest coach.

Weather: A tad bit cooler than Tuesday, possibly a little more wind. Snow flurries.

Saturday 1/23/21: Racers are off this weekend

Coaches are unavailable  this weekend so we are taking it off or ski with your family.

BKL Program Start-up: 1/07/2020

Good News! With the recent changes in VT COVID restrictions, we are able to start up our BKL programs at Bolton, as long as we have enough snow there to spread ourselves out.

Jack Rabbits, Arctic Foxes & Racers will start on 1/07/20, 4- 5:30, Bolton Valley Nordic

Penguins will start the following Tuesday, 1/12/2020, 4- 5:30, Bolton Valley Nordic

Parent ZOOM meeting on 1/05/2020 at 7:30 for all groups.  Info and Zoom link HERE.

Update 1/04/2020: FIND YOUR CHILD’s SUBGROUP

Meeting Places:

Penguins:  By the Sports Center Main Entrance

Jack Rabbits 1 & 2: By the Swing Set

Arctic Foxes 1, 2 & 3: By the Row of Fruit Trees in front of the Sports Center

Racers 1, 2, & 3: By the Woods between Parking lot and entrance to Picnic Loop.

We will be operating a little differently this year, so please attend the meeting to get all the details.

The Basics:

  1. You will need to fill out a health screening form for each child before you come to each practice. Bookmark this link:  MNC Health Screen Form.
  2. Ski from your car. Kids should change and put boots on in your car and use it as a base.
  3. There will be a meeting place set-up for each small group to meet their coach.
  4. We will wear masks in the parking lot and while skiing. The only time we will take them off is when we are going really hard and we are 6 ft. or more apart.
  5. Don’t congregate in the parking lot when picking up or dropping off kids and remember that there is no place to wait inside (i.e. be on-time for pick-up).
