Playing Stones at BKL practice

Great classic skiing last Tuesday on that old klister covered with fresh hardwax! To learn how to get all that stuff off your skis click here.   A fun game of “Stones” was enjoyed by all on Thursday night and the rain held off too!

Tues/Thurs BKL Groups

It’s Duathlon Week for BKL! Bring both sets of skis and get psyched to practice duathlon all this week!

TUESDAY: CLASSIC & SKATE.  We will all practice transitions for the duathlon, so bring both skate and classic gear and get your classic skis klistered up & hardwaxed. We will mostly classic today.

THURSDAY: CLASSIC & SKATE. More duathlon practice (we all need practice getting our equipment on and off anyways!). We’ll mostly skate and anyone racing on Sunday can stop a little early so that we have time to help you prepare your skis. SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY:  We will have wax benches set up and will be there to help kids clean kick zones and hot wax their skis (YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN GLIDE WAX).

SUNDAY: MNC DUATHLON!  Ski a loop classic, then change to skate skis and ski a loop skate! Lot’s of fun, BKL Registration opens 12-1:30, Race starts at 1:30 PM. Coaches will be on site to help wax and preview the course. Remember to bring cookies or snacks to share at the end of the race!

Mark Your Calendar:  Sleepy Hollow BKL Race, Friday, Jan. 27, 4 PM Reg., 5 PM Race.

Friday Foxes

Planned to be on at the Range at 3:45.  Contact Eden (eden_shullenberg@hotmail.com) with questions.

Cleaning klister (and other how-to clips!)

After last week’s jam-packed klister extravaganza, many MNC families might still be dealing with lots of sticky, goopy skis…

Now, you definitely don’t want to spend all winter with your skis like that! Cleaning klister can actually be pretty simple. Many people have nightmares about sticky wax everywhere, but there are some really great videos out there showing proper care techniques. Boulder Nordic Sport has a really well-produced video on this subject, as well as many other ski prep topics both for skate and classic. Check out the whole playlist here:

While the ski-specific product known as “fiberlene” is great, old rags work just fine too. Paper towels will do in a pinch, but the true champion of this process are the good old blue “shop towels” available at many hardware stores.

If you hate sticky hands, the best way to get klister off your hands is with a mechanic’s cleaner such as “GoJo” or a similar non-brand name hand cream.

Dedicated wax removers are great, but if you are in a pinch you can get by with household cleaners like “Goo Gone” or other citrus-based solvents.

Happy cleaning!

Stowe Nordic Enduro Recap

BKL Winter 16-17

Six enthusiastic BKL kids and three fearless coaches braved the cold morning temps to do the Stowe Nordic Enduro!  This was a new event format where we skied the 10km in five segments, three timed with untimed easy ski breaks (and snacks!) in between.  While this was sort of a race, it was more like intervals with snack stops and as much rest in between as you felt like taking!  The second food stop was definitely the best with cookies, cider and s’mores with marshmallows roasted over the campfire!  The course had great cover, lots of fun descents and a double pole section on single track through the woods. No wind, multiple layers, and hand warmers kept us warm and everyone had a great time! Definitely a fun event to put on your calendar for next year! Hats off to Riley who was the youngest competitor to complete the 10 km course. Great job also to Virginia, Julia, Taylor, Brady, Cole, Coach Eden, Coach Luke, Coach Rosemary and Brad Carlson!

Practice This Week:

Tuesday: Don’t scrape off Thursday’s purple klister yet because we’re going CLASSIC again and it will probably be just the thing to use on Tuesday, covered with a little warm hard wax!

Thursday:  SKATE! Pack a raincoat and dry socks.

Friday Foxes: Friday Foxes are planned to be on at the Range at 3;45.  Contact Eden (eden_shullenberg@hotmail.com) with questions.

3-Day Program Skiers: SATURDAY10- 11:30 Practice at the Range. Skate Technique. Guest Coach Rick Costanza (Rosemary gone to Waterville EC). Check back on Friday to be sure the venue hasn’t changed.
