Mid-week update and Photos

As summer draws to a close, we are shifting our training focus from base & endurance and now we are adding in more moderate intensity work. We are still doing a variety of activities as well as our normal strength and technique work. Below are several pictures from our last week of training:

Epic App Gap Ride!

This summer we’ve incorporated cycling into our formal training routine, and we capped off many weeks of training with a 38 mile ride this morning. Now 38 miles might not sound like all that much, but we did climb App Gap which means we had approx 3000′ of vertical amidst the 38 miles.

We had a huge group of riders — over 20 in all — that made the summit. Of that number, I believe 7 or 8 of them were “first ascents” of the Gap. It was a really impressive sight to see so many fit kids out on the bikes. Applause goes out to Amy Bruce for cranking up that whole darn climb and dealing with the frustration of being stuck with me for many miles! Also to Will Solow and Ben Carnahan for being the “young bucks” and sticking with the old-farts. We were lucky to have a few of the GMVS athletes join us, as well as Hallie Grossman (Bates / Stratton), a couple parents, and a friend Michael who is a triathlete who attends St Olaf college with Liam and Sam. Great day and we even finished before the rain!

Greystone Double-Pole Test (times + photos)

Yesterday we did our Greystone double-pole time trial to gauge specific strength. This is not a race against other athletes (due to differences in ski speed) but rather a method we use to monitor upper-body strength changes over time. Below are times from yesterday in alphabetical order. In parenthesis are that skier’s PR if they did the test last year:

Lukas Adamowicz, 3:23 (4:10)
Cally Braun, 4:17 (4:09)
Tatum Braun, 4:24 (5:11)
Amy Bruce, 3:54 (4:07)
Parker Francis, 3:08 (2:59)
Forrest Hamilton, 2:36 (2:41)
Henry Harmeyer, 2:34 (2:51)
Bill Harmeyer, broken pole(s) ?!
Ethan John, 3:10 (3:28)
Liam John, 3:27 (3:05)
Ben Longenbach, 4:38 (5:18)
Sam Longenbach, 2:49 (3:07)
Charlie Maitland, 3:39 (4:18)
Nigel Sarrazin, 3:30 (4:34)
Casey Silk, 4:22 (4:38)
Will Solow, 4:09 (3:53)
Ethan Thibault, 3:41 (4:40)
Hallie Grossman, 3:44 (new girls’ record)
Ben Carnahan, 4:44

Weekly photo roundup

This past week was a “recovery” week of training meaning we did shorter workouts, easier intervals, and a bit more strength. Yesterday we had a soaking wet run around Shelburne Farms (no photos from that) followed by a “gals-only” classic rollerski out to Shelburne Point. Today we wrapped up the week with a long distance classic ski out in the Colchester/Georgia/Milton area. Everyone in the group skied at least 15km with the oldest boys cruising approx 35km. Two of our youngest athletes — Ben Carnahan and Will Solow (ages 13 & 14) each skied a total of 22km which is just awesome! A huge THANK YOU to Monica and Alex John for hosting our BBQ today!

We’ve been lucky to have some guests training with us this week: Hallie Grossman (formerly Woodstock HS, Stratton, and now Bates College) as well as Jack Hegman (MMUHS, MNC, now UVM). Activities this past week included a road bike, classic rollerski + strength, track intervals/ski-walking/running intervals, skate rollerski + strength, running, gals-only classic ski, and today’s long-distance classic ski. Tomorrow a handful of our MNC crew will join GMVS, Frost Mtn and Woodstock athletes for the final summer installment of the Central Vermont Nordic Co-Op Series: a 32km skate rollerski around the Weybridge area!

Photo Roundup!

Below are some pictures from the last couple weeks of training. Our summer training focuses on a few key things: building an aerobic base, improving technique on rollerskis, and gaining specific strength. We’ve been doing a wide variety of activities including cycling, running, hiking, rollerskiing, ski-walking, strength and games.

Anna and TatumAbove is a picture of Anna Franceschetti and Tatum Braun skiing through the Range with a huge group of biathletes in the background. We saw folks from Latvia, Brazil, Canada and the US Junior National Team training at the Range. They are preparing for North American Biathlon Rollerski Championships this coming weekend, 8/10-8/11.

Classic rollerski up Bolton access roadThis is a big group of rollerskiers headed up the Bolton access road. After skiing up to the ski area we did several ski walking intervals.

Lea Davison en route to a big winCatamount Family Center held the XC Pro Tour Mountain Bike Championships this past weekend. Jeriho native Lea Davison won both days of racing and she is headed off to World Championships in South Africa.

Gloomy atop Mt MansfieldOur Saturday morning hike up Mt Mansfield was gloomy and windy. We had a few slips and splashes in the mud and water, but everyone made it out safely. Thanks to Ken and Vicky Bruce for leading us on some new trails and hosting our BBQ!!
