First snow report of the year

Craftsbury: As of Friday 11/30 at 9am: Received ~ 5″ of snow in the past 48 hours — sounds good for opening the meadow and other trails. They already have a 1.25km loop with 12″ of man-made snow in the fields.
The Range: As of Thursday 11/29/12 @ 6pm it was still snowing hard at the Range. There was approximately 3-4″ of snow on the ground. The National Guard had also begun running the snow-guns by mid-afternoon!

Smugg’s Notch Road: The picture below was taken by Jake Hollenbach on Tuesday 11/27. He skied the Stowe-side of Smuggler’s notch road both Tuesday & Wednesday and had positive reports for both skate and classic. Likely another 5-8″ as of Friday morning.

Junior Training: 11/26 – 12/2

This is a recovery week. Please note the shorter training session on Tuesday, and our tentative plan to ski at Craftsbury on Sunday. We may need some help with carpooling on Sunday if we travel out of town.

  • Monday 11/26: Swix wax clinic at SkiRack. 6:00 – ~7:15pm.
  • Tuesday 11/27: Running, strength, and games at the Range. 4:00 – 5:30pm.
  • Thursday 11/29: Skate roll with speeds and strength at the Range. 4:00 – 6:00pm.
  • Sunday 12/2: (tentatively) ski at Craftsbury. Meet at Richmond park-n-ride at 8:30am. Return approximately 1:30 – 2:00pm.

And if you don’t already know, the World Cup season started this weekend in Sweden. The US Women had historical results on both days. Kikkan Randall and Holly Brooks finished 3rd and 5th in a 10km free on Saturday. Then they teamed up with Liz Stephen (Vermonter!) and Jessie Diggins to win a bronze medal today in the relay!!

Skier Sightings at 2012 GMAA Burlington Turkey Trot

While many of the junior skiers are at our annual ski camp up in Craftsbury, other folks enjoyed the sunny morning here in Burlington at the annual GMAA Turkey Trot. If you didn’t already know, Craftsbury has about 1.25km of man-made snow and they are open for business. Nearly 20 junior skiers are at the 5-day ski camp with MNC Coaches Garrott Kuzzy and Alice Nelson.

Back to the Turkey Trot… I apologize if I forget to include someone. And with such a huge field (600+), I’m sure there are other skiers that I didn’t see.

Brendan Copley (Colchester ’12)
Ilke Van Genechten (Former UVM skier)

Happy Thanksgiving!!

MNC Graduate Round-Up

I wanted to write a quick update about our graduates that are now skiing in college. After a few minutes of searching the web, I realized there are a lot of athletes that came through the club that are now in the collegiate ranks. This list is a testament to the growing popularity of our sport in this area, and the depth of talent. If I missed someone (very likely), please let me know. Recent graduates are at the top of the list:

Sienna Searles (CVU ’12) has been training with the team at St Lawrence Univ. She joins Eric Lustgarten (BHS ’09) and Lauren Olson (Colchester ’11) on what appears to be a strong young team. St Lawrence Nordic blog.

Liam John (Essex ’12) is in the Midwest at St. Olaf College. Link to St Olaf Nordic blog.

Jack Hegman (MMU/Burke Mtn ’12) joins his older brother Pete Hegman at UVM this fall. UVM are reigning NCAA National Champions and look strong again this year.

Danny Ebenstein (MMU ’12) is just across the NY state border at Skidmore. He played goalie on the varsity soccer team this fall. Skidmore Soccer.

Brendan Copley (Colchester ’12) finished one heckuva freshman year of running at Quinnipiac Univ. Brendan was one of the top-20 freshman in the entire region (D1) and he ran a 32:51 10km at his final race of the season. Quinnipiac Running.

John Dixon and Jared Supple (CVU and MMU) are seniors at Colby College.

Emily Stitt (MMU/GMVS) and Ben Lustgarten (BHS ’09) are skiing for Middlebury College.
