First BKL Race: Stowe Nordic Cross-cut Classic!

MNC BKL racers turned out in full-force at the Stowe Nordic Cross-Cut Classic!  Esther, Niko, Carl, Kate, Taylor, Cole, Carly, Virginia, Julia, Greta, Crosby and Lily all braved the cold temps to ski a quick, up and down, 2 km classic course.

Cold temps? These kids know how to bundle up for racing! When you’re only skiing 2km, you’ve got to be warm.  Check out the buffs, the face patches, the parkas and wind shirts in the pictures below.

Everyone skied well and were rewarded at the end with beautiful, handmade, candy canes. Way to go guys! I am so proud of you all for braving the cold temps and coming out to race!

Crosscut Classic 2018!

The first big Zak and Club Cup race, right in our backyard, kicked off this past Sunday with the Crosscut Classic hosted by Stowe Nordic! MNC had a great turnout and many racers of all ages. Our BKL skiers ended up being the large majority of the kids race, and we had competitors in the U14 class all the way up to the older Masters.

Cold temps were no surprise after a brutal few weeks of thick hats and face tape…this made for simple waxing and beautiful striding conditions. The course wound uphill with some smooth sections and gradients before a couple of steep “Klaebo-style” steeps that required a run or herringbone. From there is was a rollercoaster ride down hills that were fast and flowing, but not so crazy that you had to get out of the tracks much. You could “ride the rails” around some smooth bends and dips, before hammering it home to the stadium.

Below are a few select photos from Dave Priganc, with a link to the full album at the bottom (along with results). Enjoy!

Karen does a lot of legwork to get folks psyched to race, and this one was no exception. We had a great turnout!

Winter Masters Training FAQ

Weekly Training Plans:

The technique (skate or classic) and training information will be published Sunday evening  in our Masters Training Doc.  However, due to often rapidly changing snow conditions please plan to review the Snow Report and Masters Training Doc around 3PM to confirm the plan for the day.
If you are unsure or if conditions are likely to change, consider bringing both skate and classic equipment.  Additionally, early in the season please be prepared for dry land training (ie sneakers & bounding poles) or alternate locations (the Notch, Sleepy,…).

Session Start Times:

We ask that all Masters have skis on and be on snow by the planned session start times (3:45 & 6:00PM).  Being on snow on time helps our Masters Coaches keep sessions organized, avoids having fellow skiers standing in the cold and maximizes ski time.

On Classic ski evenings please plan to arrive early to wax or get wax advice from the coaches if needed.  Early in the season we also encourage those new to Masters to arrive a early in order to get acquainted with the coaches and coaching groups.

Coaching Coverage:

Afternoon Session(3:45 – 5:15PM):

Afternoon sessions will be lead by Coach Christa.

Evening Session (6:00 – 7:30PM):

Tuesdays:   Will be our full coaching day where we plan to have three coaches and three ability groups.     Blue:  Experienced Skiers, White = Intermediate  Green = Novice/Beginner.   If you arrive late and miss the group gathering,  a white board will be available directing you the the general direction of your group.
Thursday: (1) Coach Liam will lead drills and activities for those wanting additional instruction, (2) others will ski freely or according to a prescribed workout plan. (Check-in with Coach Liam. He will provide tips and suggestions for self guided drills/activities).

Race Training Plans:

For those who purchased race training plans Coach Adam will be reaching out to you to build your plan.

Parking Reminder

Please plan to park in the large parking lot on the left side before the grooming equipment building. Access to the trails and Walker building can be obtained through the tunnels that go beneath the ski trails.  Please do not park on the side of the road near the smaller lot at the top of the hill.

MNC Coaches Clinic (w/video)

Yesterday afternoon, a great group of MNC coaches met up for a clinic that covered a lot of bases! In addition to housekeeping business like safety protocol and phone numbers, Coach Rosemary led everyone in a great teambuilding/icebreaker activity involving blindfolds and mousetraps. Scary but great for working together! After I (Adam) got the group onto some yoga mats to talk hip activation and body awareness, we took a look at some current-season ski races from a few weekends prior. We talked technique trends, and how to share them with athletes of all ages. Then we moved out onto snow to practice ourselves.

It was a really fun clinic and I for one left motivated and excited at where we’re at as a club in providing skiers of all ages with appropriate, relevant, and important skills in a relevant way! Here are some photos and a link to my “visualization” videos:
