We had a great rollerski race on our “home” track last Sunday…the Free Fall! NENSA put together a big rollerski race, and our club was highly involved in putting together the logistics and running the event. We were very excited to get back to helping put on races after a big hiatus (in particularly a hiatus at this venue).
It was a really spectacular event with perfect sunny weather and over 100 racers.
Also worth noting? Zero crashes out of 102 finishers…and that’s on a race loop that included the S-Turn downhill for all age groups. It truly is impressive how strong of a racing region New England is right now. We have an awesome collection of skiers who have all grown up challenging their skills in addition to their fitness, and can put both together to create the best racing scene in the nation (and internationally!).
The day was capped in a great way as the Junior races were the final events. Rosie won the women’s race, while Anders, Brady, and Taylor swept the podium for the men. Nothing like a great confirmation of hard work, especially for Rosie and Anders who made the decision not to run XC this fall and focus on ski training. With rollerski races and a number of engaging events and opportunities, stepping away from high school sports in the fall no longer means giving up races or experiences.
XC running has continued to go really well for many of our athletes, and we even have some seriously competitive soccer players in our midst! It really is important to recognize that there are many different paths to success at this age and racing level. The key is doing what makes you happy, and engages you to work hard and stay busy each week.
Thanks again to all of our great volunteers who helped make the event a success. Special shoutout goes to Matt Thomson who arrived extra early to help set up the course, brought a bike trailer to transport V-boards around the loop, and stayed to pick up after nearly everyone else had left. World Cup venues take note: call this man for your next FIS race!
