BKL Practices Week of 2/19/18

2 & 3 Day Programs:

Tuesday: With Rain forecasted all day and 52 degrees, we are scrapping practice at the Range and instead, having our practice at Metro-Rocks in Essex! We did this a couple of years ago and the kids had a blast! We’ll get a group discount on passes and rentals and after a brief introduction, we can climb on our own on the 8 auto belays and all their bouldering terrain.

Parents need to sign an online waiver and can do it ahead of time here: waiver

Pay when you arrive and get your children fitted with rental shoes and harness. Parents are welcome to climb as well or just watch their kids. Try to get there between 3:30 and 4 pm. I will be there until 5:30.

  • This is our discounted pricing:
    • Passes  – $13 early bird, $14 student, $17 adult
    • Rentals – $4 shoes, $2 harness

Directions:  https://www.metrorock.com/burlington/directions

Thursday: Back at the Range, Skate. Check the website before you come incase the rain took away too much snow.

3 Day Skiers & Racers:

Saturday: Bogburn Classic, Pomfret VT.  This is a great BKL race. Registration is on www.skireg.com and closes on Friday at 5pm. Check on Thursday night to see if they are still on- the rain may cause them to loose too much snow. If they cancel, we will ski at Craftsbury instead.

Update 2/21:

“The race is still on, and has been moved to the Woodstock Nordic Center: 14 The Green, Woodstock ,VT 05091”

Beautiful trails at Woodstock!

Friday Foxes:

Forecast is for warm temps and light rain later in the day. It looks like skiing at the Range will probably be ok at this point but check the website before you leave because there could be a last minute change of plan.

BKL Mini-Marathon Results!

Kids line up and listen to instructions from Coach Rosemary at the start.

BKL Practice today was the annual Mini-marathon! How many loops/k’s can you ski in an hour? Well, our kids skied anywhere from 4 km to 13k total!  Everyone brought snacks and a few parents helped kids record their laps and monitored the snack table.  Thank you parents and thanks to Katie Coons for taking the photos!

Rikert Relays

The 5/6 gang. Carl teamed up with Taylor and Virginia paired with Julia. Cole arrived just in time to partner with Callum!

Twenty MNC skiers teamed up to ski in the Rikert Classic Relay on Sunday!  It was a windy, snowy day and conditions at Rikert Touring Center were great. Coach Rosemary set up the wax bench in the lee of the “milk house” where racers could easily get their skis waxed and access the trails and starting line. Most kids had figured out their partners ahead of time and we were able to match singles up with kids from other clubs. Sometimes it’s fun to meet and race with a new friend, like Astrid did!

Coach Rosemary had figured out the wax ahead of time but it warmed up slightly and everyone came back asking for a little more kick by the time the Lollipopers went off. Coach Julie, Coach Emilie and Brad Carlson all pitched in and we quickly got everyone’s skis kicking up to snuff! No klister today, just some nice sticky hardwax!

Pippa Diller enjoying the post-race lollipop.

Astrid Longstreth was our sole 1/2 skier and she teamed up with Micah Mahood from Woodstock for a first place finish! In the 3/4 race, Pippa Diller reunited with her relay partner from the BKL Fest, Violet Anderson from Frost Mountain. They pulled out a solid second! Tessa Diller paired with Julia Cisz and landed in sixth! Great job girls!

MNC had five teams in the very competitive 5/6 relay. There are some wicked fast Vermont girls in the 5/6 age class right now and they’ve all been racing together for a number of years. Former MNC Festival partners Virginia Cobb and Julia Thurston teamed up once again and beat Putney’s speedy Sadie Bell & Caroline Tammy but came in second to Ford Sayer’s “A” team of Sarah Gluek and Wyeth Murray. MNC’s Mia Diller teamed up with Ella Cisz and skied very well, pulling into 9th place. Rounding out the 5/6 team for MNC was Dagne Pippenger and Adleigh Franke who did an awesome job and finished 11th.  Taylor Carlson and Carl Priganc were the first boys team to finish, pulling out a solid 4th place overall. Cole Shullenberger and Callum MacCurtain finished second for the boys and 6th overall. Nice skiing guys!

Callum showing some nice striding.

The 7/8 race was separated into a boys and a girls race. Jordon Shullenberger teamed up with Rye MacCurtain and skied to fifth. Great job boys! In the girls race, Festival partners Carly Trapeni and Greta Kilburn teamed up once again and kicked their way into second place behind a very fast team from Frost Mountain. Bella Norris teamed up with Maise Franke and finished third, just ahead of a CVU middle school team! Way to go girls!

I am so proud of all our MNC racers, especially those who are new to racing. Great job and I hope you had lots of fun!

By the way, I didn’t get enough photos. If you have some good ones, please send them to me and I will share them on the MNC Flicker site for all to enjoy. Thanks!

BKL Practice Week of 2/05/18

2 & 3 Day Programs

Tuesday:  SKATE.

Penguins- Strap on you favorite stuffed animal and fart lek for the animals! (Bring your favorite stuffy!)

Biathletes will work with Coach Yves and Coach Peter to get ready for this weekend’s Nor Am Biathlon.

Everyone Else– We’ll work on race tactics and play some games.

Thursday: It’s the BKL Classic Mini-Marathon!

How far can you ski in 1 hour? Snow should be good and skiing should be great!  This is always a fun practice for the kids!

  1. Come early to get your skis waxed. We will not have time to take off klister on this day, so if you need help cleaning your classic skis, bring them on Tuesday and we can help you with them after practice (it’s going to be hardwax on Thursday).
  2. Parents:  Hydration & Snacks are important for the mini-marthaon. Bring a full water bottle for each of your kids and label with their name and also bring a snack to share. You can leave both on the table outside. We need a couple of parents to help monitor and organize the snacks and also to help the kids mark down their laps. If you can help, e-mail Rosemary at sheacobb19@gmail.com

3 Day Skiers & Racers:

Sunday: Woodstock Nordic Runners’ Sweethearts BK Race. For info: Sweetheart Race

For the Biathletes: Jericho Youth NorAm, Saturday & Sunday
