Stowe Nordic Enduro Recap

BKL Winter 16-17

Six enthusiastic BKL kids and three fearless coaches braved the cold morning temps to do the Stowe Nordic Enduro!  This was a new event format where we skied the 10km in five segments, three timed with untimed easy ski breaks (and snacks!) in between.  While this was sort of a race, it was more like intervals with snack stops and as much rest in between as you felt like taking!  The second food stop was definitely the best with cookies, cider and s’mores with marshmallows roasted over the campfire!  The course had great cover, lots of fun descents and a double pole section on single track through the woods. No wind, multiple layers, and hand warmers kept us warm and everyone had a great time! Definitely a fun event to put on your calendar for next year! Hats off to Riley who was the youngest competitor to complete the 10 km course. Great job also to Virginia, Julia, Taylor, Brady, Cole, Coach Eden, Coach Luke, Coach Rosemary and Brad Carlson!

Practice This Week:

Tuesday: Don’t scrape off Thursday’s purple klister yet because we’re going CLASSIC again and it will probably be just the thing to use on Tuesday, covered with a little warm hard wax!

Thursday:  SKATE! Pack a raincoat and dry socks.

Friday Foxes: Friday Foxes are planned to be on at the Range at 3;45.  Contact Eden (eden_shullenberg@hotmail.com) with questions.

3-Day Program Skiers: SATURDAY10- 11:30 Practice at the Range. Skate Technique. Guest Coach Rick Costanza (Rosemary gone to Waterville EC). Check back on Friday to be sure the venue hasn’t changed.

Stowe Nordic Enduro, BKL & Citizens

This Enduro format event consists of multiple timed sections along a marked 15 km course (4 sections) or 10 km course (3 sections).  Interval wave starts will launch at 10:00 am with skiers in the 15 km race starting first.   Between each timed section, skiers can take a break, get some food, or ski straight on to the next section.  The course map will be made available on race day, but the timed sections will only be discovered once out on the course.  The course will make use of all types of excellent terrain available throughout the Stowe Mountain Resort Cross Country trail network. Participants will wear bibs and carry time cards that will be used for scoring each timed section.  It is the responsibility of the athlete to return their time cards upon completion where times will be totalled and results & prizes determined…note that prizes are not all based on fastest times….

Event: Sunday, 1/8: Stowe Nordic Enduro.  This is a broken 10 or 15km, freestyle, timed event. You can stop after each segment. I recommend this event for BKL skiers 5th grade and up and younger skiers who are comfortable skiing 10 km with stops.  Parents can sign-up too.  Registration $20. BKL 2-Day, 3-Day & DEVO Training, Week of 12/13

We adjusted pole straps, learned how to kick and glide wax and even got out for some games on skis on Tuesday and had a fun practice on just enough snow at Mill River Park on Thursday. The three day crew had a great time up at Craftsbury on Saturday, skiing on some awesome snow and practicing race tactics.

Training Week of 12/13

Tuesday & Thursday Skiers: SKATE technique at the Range!

Please LABEL all your child’s skis and poles with their name! Lots of kids have similar equipment and it’s easy to mistake someone else’s for yours if there is no name visible.

Friday Foxes: tbd still waiting on specifics from Coaches.

Sunday: 3-Day Skiers & Everyone who wants to race:  BKL Skate RACE at Craftsbury. Coach Rosemary will be there to help kids warm up and preview the course. Meet her on skis at 1:20 pm outside the Touring Center.    E-mail Rosemary if you are going!
