Thanks again to Gary Solow for help taking photos at the Trapp’s Eastern Cup last weekend. There has been a lot of sickness going around so our group was a bit smaller this weekend. It is February now and everyone is getting laser-focus on the most important races of their winter in the next 5-6 weeks. THings kick-off tomorrow with the EHSC/J2 qualifier races. Then we have the final Eastern Cup weekend of the year over in NH next weekend. After that are State Championships, Juniors Nationals, Eastern High School Championships and J2 Championships! It is going to be an exciting time for all the MNC athletes participating and excelling at a variety of levels! And staying healthy by missing a race here or there is a necessary part of that success.

Junior Photos: Rumford Eastern Cups
Wow what an amazing weekend January 18-19 up in good ‘ole Rumford Maine!! I say amazing for many reasons: we skied on a full 5km race course both days, on very good conditions. We had an incredible turnout of MNC athletes and families. We had a great team dinner with something like 30 athletes and parents. And, to boot, the many of the athletes had really strong race results!
Thanks to many people for the weekend: Sharon Henry for organizing the team dinner, Ed Hamilton and Don Harmeyer for waxing assistance – especially Sunday which were challenging / changing conditions, Gary Solow for photos, and all the parents for making such a commitment to trek to the boondocks for a weekend!
All the of the good photos below are from Gary. The few grainy and low-res pictures are from me. I apologize as there are a few athletes whose pictures I didn’t get.
Junior Photos and recap
First we’ll start with a video made by Bill Harmeyer:

What an awesome week, once again! Training at the Range has been really positive for the entire group.Tuesday after the cold snowy weather we were forced to improvise a bounding / running and strength workout at the Range and we had a visit from Ethan Townsend the Head Nordic Coach at St Lawrence University.
On Thursday we took everybody around the “S turns” which is the farthest out loop. Everybody skied the hills 2-3 times and became more comfortable with the challenging terrain. Our fall and pre-season athletes are now familiar with all 5 loops (total of 5km) of pavement at the Range which will really make training fun next summer! On Thursday the everybody in the group skied at least 15km with some breaking the 20km mark — not too shabby for a school night!
Friday was a small group for our heart-rate zone analysis test that we do every few weeks: running specific paces on the track (low- to medium-intensity) and we monitor heart rates and hope to see them decrease over time. A chilly night but fun running with a near full moon.
Today we had a great crew of about 12 MNC athletes wake up early (and lots of parents, too — THANKS PARENTS!) to drive down to the Mad River Valley for the final fall event of the Central Vermont Coop Series — 5km and 10km rollerski time trials. It was GORGEOUS! The boys field was wicked competitive with 2 former junior national champs participating. Lots of fun, lots of parents and siblings spectating, and the Rand family made some incredible awards for all participants: delicious cinnamon buns.
Enjoy the pics!
Photo Roundup
Two weeks ago was an “intensity week” which included the hardest bounding workout of the year (pics below). This past week included easier training and some fun training to allow the athletes to recovery from the physical load. We did some games and relays which serve as a bit of a mental break, as well. At this time of year, rollerskiing isn’t always fun since some of them have been doing it since May or early June. We also worked a lot on no-pole skate skiing which helps with balance and improves leg strength.
Photo Roundup from the past week
Whew! Our “recovery week” flew by…
Everyone seemed really tired – mentally and physically – by the end of last week (which was a “volume week” which means is was oriented around longer workouts at lower- to moderate-intensity). So it was great timing to have an easier week of training with shorter workouts and less tiresome workouts.
This morning we had approx 6 of our MNC athletes and several parents make the trek down to Waitsfield for a Central VT Co-op rollerski race. It was a really challenging course along East Warren Rd and finishing up a ~1,000m climb up. The scenery was beautiful and the views downt here are hard to beat.
